Chhattisgarh: 2 maoists killed in an encounter in Bijapur district, 2 jawans injured in blast

Bijapur: On Saturday, a police official said that two Maoists were killed in an encounter with security personnel in Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh. The gunfight happened around 8.30 am on Saturday in a forest under the Gangaloor police station area.

Official added that two jawans were injured in an IED blast in the neighbouring Sukma district. Inspector General of Police (Bastar Range) Sundarraj P said to media that the incident took place when a team of personnel from different security forces was out on an anti-Naxal operation.

He added that the operation was carried out at the tri-junction of Bijapur, Dantewada and Sukma districts, considered a Maoist bastion. He said that the Naxalites opened fire on the security forces cordoning off the forest near Pidia village, 450 km from the capital Raipur, after which an encounter started between the two sides.

He said that personnel of the state’s District Reserve Guard (DRG) and ‘Bastar Fighters’, Central Reserve Police Force and its special unit COBRA (Commando Battalion for Resolute Action) and Special Task Force (STF) of the three districts took part in the operation which was launched on Friday evening.

The officer said, “After the guns stopped firing, the bodies of two Naxalites and weapons were recovered from the spot.” The IG said that the identity of the two Maoists has not been ascertained yet. He said that the search operation is still going on in the area.
