Congress leader RaGa granted bail in 2019 defamation case; 2-year sentence suspended for 30 days

Surat: A Surat court on Thursday convicted Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in a criminal defamation case filed in 2019 over his "Modi nickname" comment. He has been sentenced to two years in this case. But he has been granted bail in this case and his two-year sentence has been suspended for 30 days.

Surat: A Surat court on Thursday convicted Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in a criminal defamation case filed in 2019 over his “Modi nickname” comment. He has been sentenced to two years in this case. But he has been granted bail in this case and his two-year sentence has been suspended for 30 days.

After the bail, Rahul tweeted, “My religion is based on truth and non-violence. Truth is my God, non-violence is the means to get it – Mahatma Gandhi.”

A court of Chief Judicial Magistrate HH Verma convicted Gandhi under Section 504 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), which deals with willful insult with intent to disturb the peace. Rahul Gandhi was present in the court when the verdict was pronounced. He reached Surat this morning.

The case against Rahul has been filed over his comment, in which he allegedly said, “Why do all thieves have the same surname Modi hi hota hai?” Congress MP Rahul Gandhi was present in Surat District Court when the verdict was pronounced in this case. Earlier he had said that whatever punishment someone gives him, he will be approved.

A complaint was filed by Bharatiya Janata Party leader and former Gujarat minister Purnesh Modi against Gandhi’s remarks. Gandhi, a Lok Sabha member from Wayanad, made the alleged remark at a public meeting held in Kolar, Karnataka ahead of the 2019 general elections.

The court of Chief Judicial Magistrate HH Verma had last week heard the final arguments of both the parties and fixed March 23 for pronouncement of the verdict. When Rahul Gandhi was asked about the punishment in the court, he said, I am a politician. In such a way, it is my duty to take up the corruption that is happening. I performed this duty. My intention was not to harm anyone. I didn’t say that intentionally.
