A recent viral video capturing BJP MP Khagen Murmu kissing a woman during his campaign trail in Bengal has ignited a storm of controversy. The incident has drawn criticism from opposition parties, particularly the Trinamool, who have accused BJP leaders of being anti-women.
Trinamool spokespersons were quick to condemn the act, labeling it as evidence of BJP’s disregard for women’s rights. They pointed to the video as a demonstration of the party’s attitude towards women, citing past instances involving BJP politicians.
In defense, Khagen Murmu, a former CPM MLA who joined the BJP in 2019, justified his actions by describing the woman as “like his child.” Similarly, the woman involved dismissed the incident as an “act of affection,” rejecting any notion of impropriety.
The Trinamool’s criticism extends beyond this specific incident, referencing other instances involving BJP politicians accused of misconduct towards women. These include allegations against former wrestling body chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and former BJP candidate Pawan Singh.
The controversy surrounding Khagen Murmu’s actions during the Bengal campaign highlights the ongoing tensions between political parties and their differing approaches to issues of gender equality and respect for women.
