Cyclone Tej to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm, head towards the south coast of Oman and Yemen

New Delhi: Once again a cyclonic storm, potentially christened ‘Tej’, has arisen in the South Arabian Sea. Due to the rise in the Arabian Sea, it is expected to affect the western coast of the country. However, India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that cyclonic storm Tej will not have any impact on Gujarat.

Low pressure area is forming in the south-east and south-west Arabian Sea. Which can take the form of a cyclonic storm by the morning of Saturday i.e. 21st October. There is a possibility of it turning into a severe cyclonic storm by Sunday. The cyclone is likely to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm on Sunday and move towards the southern coast of Oman and adjacent Yemen, away from the coastal areas of Pakistan, sources quoted Manorama Mohanty, director of the Meteorological Centre as saying in Ahmedabad.

According to the India Meteorological Department, cyclonic storms sometimes change their path. Due to which, the cyclonic storm may move towards southern Oman and Yemen coast on October 22 and may even strike it. The Meteorological Department says that the cyclone will move rapidly in the west-northwest direction. But this will not have any impact in Gujarat. The Meteorological Department says that the weather of Gujarat will remain dry for the next seven days. The state’s relief commissioner, Alok Kumar Pandey, said as of now there was no threat as the storm was heading towards Gujarat.

Those who unversed, in the month of June this year, Cyclone Biparjoy, which originated in the Arabian Sea, devastated Kutch in Gujarat and parts of Saurashtra, leaving a deadly trail of destruction. Initially it was moving towards west but later its direction changed and it hit Kutch.

A cyclonic storm is characterised by a maximum sustained wind speed of 62-88 kmph, while it is termed a severe cyclonic storm if the maximum sustained wind speed reaches 89-117 kmph.

Cyclone Biparjoy initially moved in a north-westerly direction but later turned towards Mandvi in Gujarat and Karachi in Pakistan. According to Skymet Weather, most of the models are indicating that the cyclone is rapidly moving towards the Yemen-Oman coast. But the possibility of deviation coming towards Pakistan and Gujarat coast also cannot be ruled out. Residents and officials of potentially affected areas should remain aware of the latest weather forecasts and take necessary precautions to protect themselves from this formidable force of nature.
