Kejriwal Flags Off 500 Electric Buses

In a significant move toward sustainable urban transportation, Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena and CM Kejriwal flags of 500 electric buses for the national capital. This addition brings the total number of electric buses in Delhi to 1,300.

The newly introduced buses boast disability-friendly features, air conditioning, emit zero smoke and noise, and come equipped with advanced technology such as GPS, CCTVs, and panic buttons. According to Delhi Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot, the capital now leads the country in the deployment of electric buses, with no other city boasting such a significant fleet.

Enhancing Public Transport and Reducing Emissions

Government data indicates that since January 2022, 800 electric buses have been operational in Delhi, covering a distance of over 42 million kilometers and contributing to a reduction of more than 34,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions. The initiative aligns with Delhi’s commitment to combating air pollution and enhancing the sustainability of its public transport system.

Looking ahead, the government envisions a total fleet of 10,480 buses in Delhi by 2025, with electric buses comprising 80 percent of the total. This ambitious plan aims to annually reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 4.67 lakh tonnes, further solidifying Delhi’s position as a leader in sustainable urban mobility.
