Delhi: Ghazipur landfill catches massive fire, fire tenders at spot

Ghazipur: A fire broke out in a garbage heap near the Ghazipur border. The fire was reported at around 5.25 pm, after which two fire tenders were rushed to the spot. Seeing the fire increasing, two more vehicles were sent. At present, efforts to extinguish the fire are going on. The people nearby are starting to suffocate due to the smoke of the fire. At present there is no information about any casualty.

The cause of the fire is ascertain. First smoke rose from the garbage heap, then fire broke out. Delhi Mayor Shaili Oberoi said a small patch of the Ghazipur landfill caught fire. As per instructions, all the officers are on the spot and everything is under control.

Let us tell you that with the arrival of summer, incidents of fire in garbage mountains increase. Last year also such incidents had come to light many times.

Local people say that the corporation should find a permanent solution to prevent fires at the landfill. In the summer of 2020, there was a fire at the landfill for five days, which was controlled with great difficulty by the fire brigade and the corporation.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had promised to clear this landfill site by December 31 last year, before the 2022 MCD elections. However, instead of clearing the garbage, more was added. In 2019, the height of the Ghazipur landfill was 65 metres, only eight metres less than the Qutub Minar.

In 2017, a portion of the garbage at the dumping yard fell on an adjacent road, killing two people. Three incidents of fire were reported at the Ghazipur landfill in 2022, including one on March 28 which was doused after over 50 hours.
