Despite Shubman Gill’s century, Bangladesh secured an exciting consolation victory

Shubman Gill's valiant century proved fruitless as India suffered their first loss in the ongoing Asia Cup 2023 Super 4 stage, falling to Bangladesh by a margin of 6 runs in Colombo. Nevertheless, this defeat does not impact India's standing in the tournament, as they had already secured a place in the final.

Despite Shubman Gill’s century, Bangladesh secured an exciting consolation victory

Team India experienced defeat in the final match of the Super Four round in the 2023 Asia Cup, with Bangladesh prevailing by a margin of six runs. This marked India’s inaugural loss in the ongoing Asia Cup. However, it’s worth noting that this match held no significance in the context of the tournament, as Team India had already secured a spot in the final against Sri Lanka on September 17th. For Bangladesh, this victory marked the conclusion of their journey in the tournament.

Batting first, Bangladesh posted a total of 265 runs, losing eight wickets in the process. Captain Shakib Al Hasan contributed the most with 80 runs, followed by Tauhid Hridoy’s 54 and Nasum Ahmed’s 44. Among the Indian bowlers, Shardul Thakur claimed three wickets, while Mohammed Shami secured two, and Prasidh, Akshar, and Jadeja each took one wicket.

In pursuit of the 266-run target, the Indian team managed to score only 259 runs before losing all 10 wickets. Shubhman Gill delivered a remarkable performance with 121 runs, but he lacked support from his teammates. Akshar, who contributed 42 runs, was the second-highest scorer. For Bangladesh, Mustafizur Rahman took three wickets, while Mahedi Hasan and Tanzim Hasan claimed two each. Shakib and Mehdi took one wicket each.

The contest between India and Bangladesh took place at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.

Shakib Al Hasan ,Bangladesh captain & Player of the Match: Yes, we gave the guys a chance who haven’t played much. After the last couple of games here, we thought spinners will do well. Today, I went early and had time to spend on the crease. It was a challenging wicket. It was seaming a bit and it got easier when the ball got older.

Rohit Sharma ,India captain: We wanted to give some game time to the guys, keeping the bigger picture in mind. Not compromising on how we wanted to play this game. Get in some players who are likely to play the World Cup. Axar batted brilliantly but couldn’t finish. He showed a lot of character. But credit to the Bangladesh bowlers. Gill’s hundred was brilliant. He backs his game, he knows exactly how he wants to play.

Tanzim Hasan: First wicket of Rohit bhai was a dream wicket. I concentrate on line and length and that is how I get success. When my team needs me to bowl longer spell, I am mentally prepared for that. Two ball eight runs it was so tight so I went for the yorker.
