Earthquake of 3.4 magnitude hits Ladakh, 5.8 quake hits Bangladesh

Ladakh: The National Center for Seismology (NCS) said that an earthquake measuring 3.4 on the Richter scale hit India’s northernmost region Ladakh. This earthquake occurred at 8.25 am today.

The NCS tweeted on social media X,”Earthquake of Magnitude: 3.4, Occurred on 02-12-2023, 08:25:38 IST, Lat: 35.44 & Long: 77.36, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Ladakh.”

According to the information, the earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 km. The NCS confirmed that seismic activity was felt in the area, whose epicenter was located at 35.44 latitude and 77.36 longitude.

On the same day, Bangladesh was also hit by an earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale, Reuters reported. According to the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ), the earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 km. Both Leh and Ladakh fall in seismic zone IV, indicating a fairly high risk of susceptibility to earthquakes.

Located in the tectonically active Himalayan region, these areas are vulnerable to frequent earthquakes. Identification of earthquake-prone areas in the country is based on scientific assessment incorporating past seismic activity, tectonic configuration and historical data. The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has classified the country into four seismic zones – Zone V, IV, III and II. Zone V has the highest level of seismicity, while Zone II has the least seismicity.
