Kolkata: Central Investigation Agency (CBI) raided several places in West Bengal in the Sandeshkhali case. The investigating agency recovered a large quantity of arms and ammunition. These raids were conducted during the second phase of voting under the Lok Sabha elections-2024 in many states of the country including West Bengal. Voting is being held for 3 Lok Sabha seats in West Bengal.
The move come a day after the CBI – tasked with probing allegations of extortion, land grab, and sexual assault against suspended Trinamool leader Sheikh Shahjahan and his associates – carried out raids on hideouts linked to those who attacked the Enforcement Directorate team on January 5.
A 10-member CBI team raided a house in Sarberia area of Sandeshkhali, which belonged to a relative of local Trinamool Congress leader Hafeezul Khan. Sources said that with the help of central security forces, the CBI team recovered arms and ammunition as well as several bombs kept inside the house.
The investigating officer reached the spot after receiving a tip-off and also brought with him a bomb scanning device to detect the explosives. The raid is currently going on. Former Trinamool Congress leader Sheikh Shahjahan was arrested on February 29 after 55 days on the run in the case of attack on the ED team.
His arrest came just three days after the Calcutta High Court criticized the state police for delaying action against him, saying he should be arrested. After his arrest, West Bengal Police transferred his custody to CBI. Sheikh Shahjahan has also been accused of sexual violence and land grabbing by many women in Sandeshkhali, West Bengal.
