Former Union Minister Birender Singh Quits BJP, Set to Join Congress Ahead of 2024 Lok Sabha Elections

Former Union Minister Birender Singh has left the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and is getting ready to join the Congress party. This follows his son Brijendra Singh’s recent move. Brijendra, who is currently the MP for Hisar, had already quit both the Lok Sabha and the BJP, citing “strong political reasons.”

Birender Singh, a well-known BJP leader in Haryana, announced his decision in Delhi. He confirmed that he and his wife Prem Lata, who was also a BJP MLA, will be joining the Congress soon.

This switch is a big deal as Birender Singh had been with the BJP for almost ten years after being with the Congress for more than four decades. His resignation from the Upper House in 2020 came when his son entered politics as the Hisar MP.

Brijendra Singh’s move to the Congress last month was followed by his father’s decision, showing their disagreement with BJP policies. They notably supported farmers protesting against farm laws in 2020 and backed wrestlers protesting against BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh over harassment allegations.

The father-son duo’s exit from the BJP shows their disapproval of the party’s choices, including its partnership with the Jannayak Janata Party (JJP). With Haryana preparing for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections on May 25, this political change sets the stage for an interesting electoral contest, with results expected on June 4.
