New Delhi: Rohan Bopanna created history by winning the Australian Open men’s doubles title with his partner Matthew Ebden, becoming the third Indian to achieve such a feat. The Indo-Australian pair won against Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavasori.
After his remarkable win, in an emotional on-court interview, Bopanna spoke candidly about his wife’s role in his career, particularly highlighting the presence of his in-laws on occasions when he won Grand Slams.
The world No. 1 men’s doubles player fondly recalled how his last visit to his in-laws coincided with their mixed doubles Grand Slam win at the French Open in 2017, jokingly wondering why he attended their matches more often. The presence of his in-laws brought a charm, or as Bopanna called it, “in-laws’ luck”, which he felt contributed to his success on the court.
Bopanna said in his on-court interview,”My in-laws are here. The last time they came I won my mixed doubles Grand Slam (French Open 2017). I don’t know why they don’t come more often. My beautiful wife, Supriya, and my daughter, Tridha ..Thank you for all your support, all the love. I know a few years ago I sent her a video message and said ‘I’ll close it one day.’ Because I was not winning matches at all. I went for 5 months without winning any matches. I thought this would be the end of my journey. The determination inside me pushed me to move ahead. I changed a lot of things and one Found an amazing partner.”
