Hyderabad: Medical student dies days after attempting suicide after being harassed by seniors

Hyderabad: After battling for five days, 26-year-old Dharvath Preethi, a first-year PG medical student, dies at Hyderabad’s Nizam’s Institute of Medical Science (NIMS) on Sunday. Though the cause of death was not mentioned, she was reportedly declared brain dead after multiple organ failure. Many parts of Preethi’s body had stopped working. She was put on ventilator support.

Preethi had allegedly tried to commit suicide in Warangal, after which she was admitted to the Nizam Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS). In the bulletin issued by Dr. Satyanarayan, Medical Superintendent of NIMS, it has been said that despite continuous efforts by the team of specialist doctors, Dr. Preethi could not be saved. He was declared dead on 26 February at 9.10 pm.

Several wings of the city police were heavily deployed at NIMS and Gandhi Hospital, Secunderabad, where the post-mortem is expected to be conducted late in the night. However, Preethi’s father, Narendra Dharawat, refused to take her body, demanding an inquiry into the incident by the sitting judge.

Earlier it was said in the hospital bulletin that many organs of Preethi have stopped working and she is on ventilator support. Her condition remains critical. On the other hand, the Matewada police had arrested Dr. MD Saif, a second year postgraduate (PG) student at Kakatiya Medical College (KM) on Friday in this case. It is alleged that Preethi came to this medical college in November 2022 and from December-2022, Dr. MD Saif targeted and harassed Preethi.

As per various bulletins shared by the hospital, she was in critical condition for the last four days. According to the bulletin shared by the hospital on Sunday morning, he was being put on ECMO, ventilator and dialysis.

Preethi’s father said, ‘I want a detailed report as to what treatment my daughter was given in the last four days.’ He demanded an ex-gratia of Rs 5 crore and a government job to a family member. He also appealed to the government to ensure strict punishment for Saif. Narendra demanded that Dr. Saif, the superintendent of MGM Hospital, as well as the principal of KMC and the head of the anesthesiology department, should be suspended so that the investigation is transparent.

Warangal Police Commissioner (CP) AV Ranganath said that the accused MD Saif was produced before the Third Judicial First Class Magistrate here and has been transferred to Khammam Jail. Earlier, Telangana Governor Dr. Tamilisai Soundararajan had inquired about Preethi’s health condition after reaching NIMS Hospital in Hyderabad.

She tweeted and wrote – It is painful to see a PG medical student in the critical care unit. Condolences have been given to his family members. There is a need for treatment of workplace stress in higher medical studies. A thorough investigation should be done. NIMS will ensure best medical care to save his life.
