Zanzibar: The President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Hussein Ali Mwinyi, inaugurated The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras Zanzibar on Monday at the Zanzibar campus, in the presence of Tanzanian officials, Indian dignitaries, faculty, and students. This marks the first international campus of an IIT and represents an historic initiative by the Indian government to extend India’s top-quality education system to the global stage.
IIT Madras has reported that the inaugural batch at IIT Madras Zanzibar includes a notable 40 percent representation of women in the BS and MTech programs in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (AI).
The current campus in the Bweleo district, situated about 15 kilometers south of Zanzibar Town, is equipped with international-standard amenities to cater to the immediate needs of students. A permanent campus will be constructed in collaboration between the Government of Zanzibar and the Government of India.
Initially, the institute will offer BS and MTech programs, with plans to introduce additional academic programs in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence in the coming year.
The first batch of students admitted to IIT Madras Zanzibar hails from Zanzibar, mainland Tanzania, Nepal, and India, with women comprising 40 percent of the students.
The campus features dormitory accommodation, offices, classrooms, auditoriums, dining facilities, a dispensary, and plans for sports facilities.
The programs offered at IITM Zanzibar are open to students of all nationalities, including Indians.
In addition to comprehensive curricula in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, students will have access to various opportunities during their studies, such as study abroad/semester exchange programs with IIT Madras’ partner institutions in the UK, Australia, and other countries, internships with relevant companies, and the possibility to fulfill certain course requirements at the IIT Madras campus in Chennai, India.
The first academic year commenced in October 2023, with students from diverse backgrounds, including Zanzibar, India, Nepal, and mainland Tanzania.
Furthermore, the Indian government is offering numerous scholarships for citizens of Tanzania/Zanzibar to pursue various degree programs at IIT Madras.
