Illegal’ IPL 2023 streaming case: Actress Tamannaah Bhatia summoned by Maharashtra cyber department

Mumbai: On Thursday, in a case related to illegal broadcast of the 2023 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), a subsidiary of Mahadev online gaming and betting application, actress Tamannaah Bhatia has been summoned by the Maharashtra Cyber department.

Actress Tamannaah, known for her roles in films like ‘Baahubali’, has been summoned on April 29. The investigation into the illegal streaming case dates back to September 2023 when the network lodged a complaint alleging infringement of their Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) by the app.

On social media platform X, in a statement they said, “Maharashtra Cyber summons actor Tamannaah Bhatia for questioning in connection with the illegal streaming of IPL 2023 on Fairplay App that caused loss of Crores of Rupees to Viacom. She has been asked to appear before Maharashtra Cyber on 29th April.”

They also added,“Actor Sanjay Dutt was also summoned in this connection on 23rd April but he had not appeared before them. He had, instead, sought a date and time for recording his statement and said that he was not in India on the date.”

It is also reported that Sanjay Dutt’s name also emerged in connection with the case. He was asked to appear for questioning earlier this week. “He had, instead, sought a date and time for recording his statement and said that he was not in India on the date,” the statement clarified.

Earlier, rapper and singer Badshah was questioned in the same case. Tamannaah and Sanjay allegedly promoted and endorsed subsidiary app of the Mahadev betting app. All these actors and singers had promoted the app to watch IPL even as the app didn’t have official broadcasting rights, leading to heavy losses for official broadcasters.
