Karnataka: An official said that a 19-year-old man has been arrested for raping a 17-year-old girl for months and impregnating her in Karnataka’s Hubli. The 19-year-old man raped the girl multiple times between January 1 and May 3 this year, according to the police.
After receiving information about the incident, pro-Hindu activists and BJP workers protested in front of the local police station demanding justice for the victim and raised slogans against the Revanth Reddy-led state government. Official added that the man knew the victim from school and allegedly harassed, abused and threatened her.
Giving details about this incident, Hubli-Dharwad Police Commissioner Renuka Sukumar said the incident came to light on May 3. Hubli-Dharwad Police Commissioner added,”At nearly 5 pm, we received information about a Medico-Legal Case, involving a minor girl who was pregnant.” The police commissioner said, “Acting on the complaint, we registered a case and arrested the accused and all further police action is being ensured.”
The police also said that the victim was a minor so that a case has been registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO). Since the girl belonged to the Scheduled Tribe (ST), the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act has also been invoked.
