India defeats England by 100 runs, securing their sixth consecutive victory

India clinched their sixth consecutive victory in the World Cup as they defeated England by 100 runs in Lucknow. India posted a total of 229 for nine, with skipper Rohit Sharma’s 87 and Suryakumar Yadav’s 49 contributing significantly. In response, England struggled to cope with India’s formidable bowling attack, led by Jasprit Bumrah (3/32) and Mohammed Shami (4/22), as they were bowled out for 129 in 34.5 overs. England’s fifth loss in six games virtually eliminates them from semifinal contention, while India remains the only unbeaten team in the tournament, positioning them well for the semis.

India’s success was initiated by Bumrah and Shami, who picked up crucial early wickets, leaving England at 39 for four within the first 10 overs. Bumrah dismissed Dawid Malan and Joe Root in successive deliveries, while Shami sent Jonny Bairstow and Ben Stokes back to the pavilion in similar fashion. England’s struggle continued as Kuldeep Yadav’s delivery dismantled skipper Jos Buttler’s stumps.

Rohit Sharma’s masterclass and his partnership with K L Rahul stabilized India’s innings after an initial stumble at 40 for three. Rohit’s 91-run partnership with Rahul and a valuable 33-run stand with Suryakumar guided India. However, Rohit’s dismissal triggered a series of wickets. Despite Rohit’s exemplary innings, England’s bowlers and fielding displayed a commendable performance, with Chris Woakes (2/33), Adil Rashid (2/35), and David Willey (3/45) making significant contributions.

In pursuit of India’s total, England faced the daunting task of contending with a two-paced pitch and India’s formidable bowling attack. They struggled to build partnerships, and their innings crumbled as they lost wickets at regular intervals.

The presence of a dew-covered outfield in the evening did not deter India’s bowlers, who continued to apply pressure and were well supported by the fielding unit. This victory places India in an excellent position to secure a spot in the tournament’s semifinals .
