India Set to Introduce GPS-Based Toll Collection System: An Overview of the Mechanism

New Delhi: Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has announced a revolutionary shift in toll collection methods on highways in India. The current toll plazas that disrupt seamless drives will soon be replaced by GPS-based toll collection systems, with the transition expected to begin as early as April this year. The government has appointed a consultant to oversee the implementation of this innovative system on national highways, aimed at reducing traffic congestion and accurately charging motorists based on the exact distance traveled.

Pilot Program and Aim for Efficient Traffic Management

Minister Gadkari revealed that the GPS-based toll collection system will be introduced on a pilot basis in addition to the existing FASTags. This strategic move is geared towards streamlining traffic flow and ensuring that drivers are charged based on the precise distance covered on highways. The initiative is expected to bring a significant reduction in waiting times and enhance the overall efficiency of toll collection processes.

Financial Impact and Future Projections

Highlighting the financial aspect, Gadkari mentioned that the toll revenue of the state-owned National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is currently ₹40,000 crore and is anticipated to rise substantially to ₹1.40 lakh crore within the next 2-3 years.

“The government is looking at new technologies, including GPS-based toll systems, to replace toll plazas in the country… We will bring new technology in six months,” affirmed Gadkari.

GPS-Based Toll System Mechanics

The GPS-based electronic toll collection system will utilize an Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) system, employing cameras installed on highways to deduct tolls based on the distance traveled by a vehicle. In contrast to the current RFID-based toll collection of FASTags, this system ensures fairness by charging drivers according to the distance covered rather than imposing fixed tolls at booths.

The innovative approach not only promises enhanced accuracy in toll calculations but also alleviates concerns for drivers, eliminating the need for cash transactions, waiting for change, or monitoring FASTag account balances. The toll fees will be automatically deducted from linked accounts, utilizing a secure electronic payment system. This advanced method is anticipated to minimize human errors and discourage toll evasion, contributing to a more efficient and hassle-free toll collection experience.
