Indian-origin student arrested, banned from Princeton University for taking part in Anti-Israel protests in US

US: Indian-origin student Achinthya Sivalingam, who studying at the prestigious Princeton University is among two students who have been arrested and banned from Princeton University in the US over pro-Palestine protests on the campus.

US: Indian-origin student Achinthya Sivalingam, who studying at the prestigious Princeton University is among two students who have been arrested and banned from Princeton University in the US over pro-Palestine protests on the campus.

The development comes amid continued protests at major universities across the US against the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza. Sivalingam, who was born in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, and raised in Columbus, Ohio. Ms Sivalingam is a student of Masters in Public Affairs in International Development at Princeton while Mr Sayed is a PhD candidate there.

Tamil Nadu-born Achinthya Sivalingan and Hassan Sayed were arrested after the protesters set up tents for an encampment in a university courtyard early Thursday morning, according to the information.

A university spokesperson said that the two graduate students were arrested for trespassing and have been “immediately barred from the campus.” Both the student led to the protesters packing up their tents while continuing to stage a sit-in demonstration.

They also face disciplinary action. The sit-in protest, which initially saw a crowd of about 110 people, increased to some 300 by Thursday afternoon. The spokesperson also said the students were arrested “after repeated warnings from the Department of Public Safety to cease the activity and leave the area.”
