New Delhi: Fast bowler Joginder Sharma, who won the first T20 World Cup to the Indian cricket team, has retired from cricket. On February 3, Joginder Sharma announced his retirement from all forms of cricket by tweeting. Joginder Sharma, 39, was away from international cricket for a long time. He played his last international match in 2007 itself.

New Delhi: Fast bowler Joginder Sharma, who won the first T20 World Cup to the Indian cricket team, has retired from cricket. On February 3, Joginder Sharma announced his retirement from all forms of cricket by tweeting. Joginder Sharma, 39, was away from international cricket for a long time. He played his last international match in 2007 itself. Joginder Sharma is currently posted as DSP in Haryana Police.

Joginder Sharma dominated the final match of the first T20 World Cup played in the year 2007. In that match, Pakistan needed 13 runs in the last over to win. Everyone was in awe, in the meanwhile, captain MS Dhoni caught the ball to Joginder Sharma, unknown to World Cricket, for the last over. Joginder Sharma made India the world champion by getting Misbah out caught by Sreesanth on the third ball of this over. After this he became a star overnight.

Joginder Sharma wrote in his letter to the BCCI secretary, “Today I am with all gratitude and humility taking retirement from all forms of the game. I had a wonderful journey from 2002 to 2017 playing cricket at the highest level of the game. Thanks to the Board of Control for Cricket in India, Haryana Cricket Association, Haryana Government and Chennai Super Kings for giving me this opportunity.

Thanks also to all my coaches, teammates, mentors and support staff for helping make my dream come true. Thanks also to all the cricket fans who supported me through my ups and downs and I will never forget the moments spent with you. Lastly, I would like to thank my family and friends who have showered me with immense love and support. He is my strength and I could not have reached where I am today without him.”

Joginder Sharma comes from Rohtak, Haryana. He has played only 4 ODIs and 4 T20 matches for India. He made his ODI debut in the year 2004, while played the last ODI in 2007. Joginder took 1 wicket in 4 ODIs, while he has 4 wickets in 4 T20s. He has taken 12 wickets in 16 matches of IPL.
