New Delhi: Big blow to team India as cricket star Shubman Gill has been officially ruled out of today’s ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 match between India and Australia due to illness. The prolific opener has not traveled with the team to the stadium, ODI World Cup 2023 official broadcaster reported.
It seems like 24-year-old Shubman Gill, who is reportedly suffering from dengue fever, is not fully fit to play for India’s ICC Cricket World Cup opener against Australia. Rohit Sharma-led India start its ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 campaign with a match against five-time winners Australia on Sunday (October 8) in Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium.
25-Year-old Ishan Kishan has plenty of experience as an opener, the left-hander is the most likely option the Indian team management could go with for the opening slot, alongside Rohit Sharma. During the toss, Rohit said that they wait till the last minute for Gill’s fitness report but it will be Ishan who will open the batting with him on Sunday.
It is expected that Shubman will take four to five more days to regain full match fitness. It is highly likely that the opener will miss India’s second match in ICC Cricket World Cup, which is against Afghanistan on Wednesday (October 11) and will make a comeback for massive India vs Pakistan ODI World Cup 2023 clash on Saturday (October 14).

“No, it doesn’t worry me (Shubman’s availability for IND vs AUS match). I mean, obviously, he is sick. I feel for him. But, in terms of me being a human being first, I want him to get well, not just the captain thinking, ‘Oh, I want Gill to play tomorrow.’ No, I want him to get well,” Rohit responded when asked about his concern regarding Shubman Gill.
“He’s a young guy with a fit body, so he’ll recover quickly.”
Australia captain Pat Cummins opted to bat first against India after winning the toss.
