IOC board approves inclusion of cricket and four more sports for Los Angeles 2028

Mumbai: On Friday, The Executive Board of the International Olympic Committee approved the inclusion of cricket in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. After the second day of the Executive Board meeting in Mumbai, IOC President Thomas Bach said that IOC officials have accepted the LA organizers’ proposal to include cricket as one of the five new sports in the 2028 Olympics.

Along with cricket, the 2028 Olympics will also include four new sports including baseball/softball, flag football (non-contact American football), squash and lacrosse. According to IOC rules, each host city has the right to request the inclusion of multiple sports for its edition of the Games.

IOC President Thomas Bach told the media at the end of the Executive Board meeting, ‘These proposals have been accepted as a package by the IOC Executive Board.’ Earlier this week, organizers of the LA 2028 Games expressed their desire to add cricket, flag football, lacrosse, squash and baseball-softball to the event.

The next step should be an IOC session starting on Sunday to finalize the status of these sports in the Olympics. The IOC session will need to ratify the board’s recommendation. Talking about the increasing popularity of cricket in the world, IOC President Thomas Bach said that the Olympic Committee will work with the ICC and not with individual cricket officials of any country.
