Jharkhand: Hemant Soren moves SC challenging his arrest in money laundering case

Jharkhand: On Thursday, Hemant Soren, Former Jharkhand Chief Minister, approached the Supreme Court challenging his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate in a money laundering case. A bench comprising Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra agreed to hear the plea of the former Jharkhand chief minister on Friday.

The plea against Soren’s arrest by the Directorate of Enforcement was mentioned before the Supreme Court by senior advocate Kapil Sibal. Senior lawyers Kapil Sibal and Abhishek Singhvi, appearing for Soren, told the apex court that the leader will be withdrawing his plea from the Jharkhand High Court on the issue.

Sibal also told the court they were withdrawing their case from the Jharkhand High Court, where it was mentioned late on Wednesday. Senior lawyers Kapil Sibal and Abhishek Singhvi, appearing for Soren, told the apex court that the leader will be withdrawing his plea from the Jharkhand High Court on the issue.

Referring to the petition, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said, “The Enforcement Directorate has arrested thousands of people, not everyone can come to the Supreme Court.”

Responding to the Solicitor General, Sibal said, “Everyone will be arrested before the election.” The Enforcement Directorate arrested Soren after interrogation of more than seven hours on charges of money laundering in the alleged land fraud case.

Prior to the arrest, he resigned from the post of Chief Minister and posted a video message, in which he said, “I will not bow down … finally, the truth will win.” He said that the time has come to wage war against the feudal system that persecuted the poor, Dalits and tribals.

Soren also claimed that he had nothing to do with the money laundering case in which he was arrested. After Soren’s resignation, the party’s loyal and state transport minister Champai Soren was named his successor.
