In light of recent allegations of sexual harassment in schools located in Jind and Kaithal, the Kurukshetra administration has introduced standard operating procedures (SOPs) designed for both government and private schools. In response to recent incidents of alleged sexual harassment in Jind and Kaithal schools, the Kurukshetra administration has issued standard operating procedures (SOPs) for both government and private schools. These SOPs aim to prevent incidents against girl students and address such cases effectively.

The administration’s SOPs include several guidelines for schools, such as keeping classroom doors open during teaching, prohibiting retiring rooms for officers or officials on school premises, and ensuring the installation of CCTV cameras in classrooms and school premises with regular monitoring.

In the event of a complaint, the authorities are urged to act decisively, promptly, and systematically. The SOPs emphasize proactive measures to prevent child sexual abuse, and school management committees are encouraged to promote a culture of respect and inclusion by constituting committees aligned with the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

These committees are expected to conduct orientation programs and seminars for employees and students to raise awareness about dealing with discrimination and sexual harassment issues. The SOPs also recommend strengthening existing forums like ‘Balika Manch’ (Girls’ Forum) through training provided by psychologists.

Other measures outlined in the SOPs include the installation of suggestion/complaint boxes, designated nodal officers, and the establishment of anti-sexual harassment committees. Additionally, schools are advised to address vulnerabilities in transportation facilities by removing curtains from buses and ensuring the presence of female staff during journeys.

City Magistrate Harpreet Kaur emphasized the importance of schools following these SOPs to create a safe and secure environment for students. The SOPs have been shared with all schools, and principals are expected to ensure compliance.

In a related development, following the arrest of a government school principal in Kaithal for alleged sexual harassment, 16 more girls have come forward with statements against the principal. An SIT has been formed to investigate the matter, and statements of a total of 20 students, including the initial four complainants, have been recorded. The principal was arrested, and efforts are underway to apprehend a private contractor accused in the case.
