Manipur violence: 2 Injured in overnight clash between security forces and mob in Imphal

Two civilians have been injured in the latest incidents of violence in Manipur. After midnight on Friday, there was a clash between security forces and a crowd of miscreants in the capital Imphal, in which two people were injured. Officials said that during this time an attempt was also made to torch the houses of BJP leaders. Similarly, gunshots were heard in the night at Kwakta in Bishnupur district and Kangwai in Churachandpur.

Imphal/Kolkata: Clashes broke out between the security forces and the mob in Manipur’s Imphal city overnight on Friday. Two people were injured in this. Officials said on Saturday that a mob in Imphal also tried to burn houses of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders. According to officials, there were reports of firing throughout the night from Kwakta in Manipur’s Bishnupur district and Kangwai in Churachandpur district.

The robbery attempt took place at Iringabam police station in Imphal West, they said. However, no weapon was stolen during this period. According to officials, the Army, Assam Rifles and Manipur Rapid Action Force (RAF) carried out a joint march till midnight in Imphal to prevent the rioters from assembling. He said a mob of about 1,000 people tried to set fire to buildings located near the palace complex.

According to officials, the RAF fired tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the crowd. He told that in Imphal the mob also tried to set fire to the house of MLA Biswajit. However, an RAF contingent dispersed the crowd.

According to officials, the mob gheraoed the BJP office in Sinjemai after midnight but could not harm it as the army dispersed the mob. Similarly, a mob tried to ransack the house of BJP women’s wing president Sharda Devi near Porampet in Imphal around midnight, but the security forces chased them away, he said.

Robbery attempt at Iringabam police station as well
There was also an attempted robbery at the Iringabam police station in Imphal West. However, no weapons were stolen. The Army, Assam Rifles and Manipur Rapid Action Force conducted a joint march till midnight in the state capital to prevent rioters from assembling.

A mob of 1000 people attacked
A mob of about 1000 people tried to burn down several buildings near the Imphal Palace grounds. The RAF fired tear gas shells and also fired rubber bullets to disperse the crowd.

On the other hand, the mob also tried to set fire to the house of MLA Biswajit. However, the RAF column dispersed the crowd. Some other people surrounded the BJP office in Sinjemai after midnight, but no one was hurt as it was dispersed by an army squad.

Similarly, a mob tried to ransack the house of BJP’s Mahila Morcha president Sharda Devi near Porampet in Imphal around midnight. The security forces later chased away the youths.
