Georgetown: A 15-year-old girl in the South American country of Guyana was charged with 19 murders on Monday for setting fire to her school dorm.

It is known that 18 female students and a five-year-old boy were killed in a fire in a building in the central city of Mahdia. Police said that the phone of the accused girl student was seized, following which she set the hostel on fire.

Police said the accused girl has been lodged at the Guyana Juvenile Detention Center and the charges against her were formalized during a virtual hearing in the magistrate’s court.

Police said that in the early hours of May 22, screams of students were heard in a hostel, following which fire and smoke were seen in the bathroom area of ​​the hostel. No one was left as the doors were locked.

30 children were admitted to the hospital
About 30 children were hospitalized after the blaze, while two girls were taken to New York on Saturday for treatment in critical condition, according to police. However, authorities identified 13 bodies through DNA testing and their remains were returned to their families for burial.
