Mumbai Indians announces appointment of Lasith Malinga as bowling coach for IPL 2024

Mumbai: Mumbai Indians have announced former Sri Lanka fast bowling legend Lasith Malinga as their new bowling coach ahead of the IPL 2024 season. Malinga will replace Shane Bond who was with the team from 2015 until he stepped down earlier this week. Malinga was the bowling coach of IPL team Rajasthan Royals for the 2022 and 2023 seasons.

Mumbai: Mumbai Indians have announced appointed former Sri Lanka legend Lasith Malinga as their new bowling coach ahead of the IPL 2024 season.He has joined the Mumbai Indians coaching team led by Mark Boucher and will join the team along with his former teammate Kieron Pollard who is working as the batting coach. Malinga will replace Shane Bond who was with the team from 2015 until he stepped down earlier this week. Malinga was the bowling coach of IPL team Rajasthan Royals for the 2022 and 2023 seasons.

Malinga said, ‘It’s an honor to be appointed bowling coach of Mumbai Indians. After MI New York and MI Cape Town, my journey continues in One Family. I look forward to working with Mark, Pauly, Rohit Sharma and the rest of the team. I particularly liked the approach of MI’s bowling unit last season. Many young talents in the team have the potential to excel’.

Malinga 170 wickets have come in the IPL, which is the joint-sixth most wickets by a bowler in the history of the tournament. Before retiring in 2021, Malinga also served as the team’s mentor in 2018, in addition to 11 years as a player for Mumbai. As an IPL player, Malinga won four IPL titles for Mumbai in 2013, 2015, 2017 and 2019, apart from the Champions League T20 trophy in 2011. In total, Malinga played 139 matches for Mumbai, taking 195 wickets at an economy rate of 7.12.

However, Malinga has spent a total of 13 years with Mumbai Indians since 2009. During this time he has won a total of 7 trophies in all leagues, including 4 IPL titles, 2 Champions Leagues as a player and a Major League Cricket title as a bowling coach. Earlier he has worked as fast bowling coach with Rajasthan Royals.
