Nagaland polls 2023: Hekani Jakhalu creates history with victory in Dimapur, becomes first woman MLA in Nagaland

Hekani Jakhalu won from Dimapur-III seat by 1536 votes. He defeated Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) candidate Ejeto Zhimomi. However, it is believed that Nagaland may get another woman legislator this time. In fact, apart from Jakhalu, NDPP's Salhoutuonuo Kruse is leading by more than 400 votes from West Angami seat.

Nagaland Election Result 2023: The results of the three northeastern states of Meghalaya, Nagaland and Tripura came on Thursday. People created history in Nagaland. For the first time a woman MLA was elected here. BJP’s ally NDPP Party candidate Hekani Jakhalu won from Dimapur-III seat. With this, she has become the first woman legislator of Nagaland.

Hekani Jakhalu won from Dimapur-III seat by 1536 votes. He defeated Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) candidate Ejeto Zhimomi. However, it is believed that Nagaland may get another woman legislator this time. In fact, apart from Jakhalu, NDPP’s Salhoutuonuo Kruse is leading by more than 400 votes from West Angami seat.

Hekani Jakhalu contested the Dimapur III seat from Bharatiya Janata Party’s alliance NDPP (Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party) in the Nagaland Assembly Elections 2023.

Nagaland has held assembly elections 14 times so far. But before this no woman became MLA. This time 183 candidates are in the fray in the assembly elections. There are four women candidates out of these. Apart from Hekani Jakhalu, Kruse, Congress’s Rosie Thompson from Tenning seat and BJP’s Kahuli Sema from Atoiju seat are also in the fray.

So far only two women MPs have been elected in Nagaland. In the year 1977, Rano Mese Shazia was elected a member of the Lok Sabha by winning on the ticket of the United Democratic Party. She was the first woman to reach the Parliament from Nagaland. After that, last year BJP elected S.K. as a Rajya Sabha member from Nagaland. Phangnon Konyak was nominated, along with which another woman from Nagaland reached Parliament.
