Northeast on High Alert: IMD Issues Orange Alert for Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh

As the Northeast braces for inclement weather, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded an ‘Orange Alert’ for Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh, anticipating heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next five days. The alert comes in the wake of severe weather conditions that have already caused havoc in parts of West Bengal, leaving a trail of destruction and injuries.

Severe Weather Forecast

IMD’s Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Guwahati has issued a special bulletin warning of thunderstorms, accompanied by lightning and heavy rainfall, with gusty winds reaching speeds of 30-40 km per hour. Residents of the affected states are advised to be prepared for adverse weather conditions that may pose risks to life and property.

Alert Levels and Preparedness Measures

The ‘Orange Alert’ indicates a heightened state of readiness, urging authorities and citizens alike to take proactive measures to mitigate the potential impact of the impending weather events. Meanwhile, a ‘Yellow Alert’ has been issued for the subsequent four days, signaling the need for continuous monitoring and preparedness to respond to evolving conditions.

Regional Impact and Forecast

While the alert pertains primarily to Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh, neighboring states such as Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura have also been advised to remain vigilant. Although the weather agency initially issued a ‘Yellow Alert’ for Sunday and Monday in these states, the warning was subsequently withdrawn.

Cyclonic Circulation and Synoptic Conditions

A cyclonic circulation over Assam, coupled with moisture incursion from the Bay of Bengal, is expected to trigger light to moderate rainfall across the region, with isolated instances of heavy to very heavy rainfall. This synoptic setup underscores the potential for adverse weather phenomena that may exacerbate existing challenges.

In the aftermath of heavy rain and storms, reports have emerged of uprooted trees, damaged infrastructure, and disrupted livelihoods in various parts of the region.
