Darbhanga: In a baffling turn of events, residents of Darbhanga district in Bihar woke up to find their community pond mysteriously vanished, making way for a newly constructed hut. Local authorities suspect the involvement of a notorious land mafia syndicate eyeing the prime real estate.
The vanished pond, previously a communal hub for fishing and recreational activities, has left locals in shock. Amid rising land prices in Darbhanga, the water body’s prime location became an enticing prospect for land grabbers.
Secretive Night Operations: Authorities Caught Off Guard
According to Amit Kumar, the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO), the pond’s disappearance likely occurred over a span of 10-15 days, primarily during nighttime operations. Despite previous interventions by zonal officials, who seized some construction materials earlier, the mafia managed to execute their plan covertly.
“The locals had raised concerns and reported illegal filling activities to authorities,” stated DSP Kumar. “However, the perpetrators continued their operations under the cover of darkness, leaving no trace of the once-thriving pond.”
Series of Bizarre Thefts Plague Bihar
This peculiar incident adds to Bihar’s growing list of unconventional thefts. Notably, in November 2022, miscreants meticulously disassembled a diesel engine in Begusarai’s railway yard, pilfering it piece by piece via an underground tunnel. Earlier the same year, a 60-foot bridge in Rohtas district vanished without a trace, culprits employing heavy machinery and sophisticated tools for a swift three-day heist.
