New Delhi: On Saturday, Banwarilal Purohit, Punjab Governor and Chandigarh Administrator resigned due to ‘personal reasons and certain other commitments’. He had been holding the office since August 2021.
In his resignation letter to President Droupadi Murmu, Purohit wrote,“Due to my personal reasons and certain other commitments, I tender my resignation from the post of the Governor of Punjab and Administrator, Union Territory, Chandigarh. Please accept the same and oblige.”
A three-time MP from Nagpur (twice from Congress and once from BJP) Purohit has previously served as the Governor of Tamil Nadu and Assam. Banwari Lal Purohit had disputes with the government of Punjab over many issues. An important issue in this was the delay in approving pending bills.
He has been engaged in a long-running war of words with the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab, having written several letters to Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann seeking clarification on several issues related to the state. On November 10, 2023, the Supreme Court issued strict instructions to Governor Purohit regarding the delay in approving five bills passed by the Punjab Assembly.
