Punjab: Two drones recovers, 1 Kg heroin seized near India-Pakistan border in Amritsar

Amritsar: On the morning of December 19, alert Border Security Force (BSF) and Punjab Police personnel intercepted a suspicious drone near Dhanoe Khurd village in Amritsar. A packet of heroin was seized in this joint operation, which is the second such incident in less than a week. The drone, suspected to have originated from Pakistan, was carrying contraband consisting of a nylon ring and a small torch.

Prior to this incident, on December 16, a drone carrying a package of suspected narcotics weighing approximately 545 grams was confiscated on the outskirts of the same village. The narcotics were wrapped in yellow adhesive tape and attached to a rope in a neighboring field. The seized drones were recognised as quadcopters, specifically a DJI Mavic 3 Classic model manufactured in China. In total, around one kilogram of heroin was seized from both the drones.

The Border Security Force in Amritsar is facing challenges due to dense fog, which provides the perfect mask for Pakistan-based entities to smuggle and send weapons into Indian territory using drones. The year 2023 has seen at least 90 drone intrusions, with the recent recovery of 500 grams and 570 grams of heroin dropped by drones in the Amritsar sector. In response to this emerging threat, BSF has increased its surveillance and installed anti-drone technology to intercept incoming drones.

In an effort to prohibit smuggling and crack down on smugglers, BSF has submitted a list of over 100 drug smugglers to Punjab Police for monitoring. Police and BSF are working in coordination and appropriate action is being taken by preparing a list of identified drug smugglers. The recent seizure of drones and contraband items underlines the importance of these joint efforts in maintaining border security and combating drug trafficking.
