Jaipur: A 24-year-old woman, who was battling a lung infection and admitted to the ICU of a private hospital was allegedly raped by a nursing assistant in Rajasthan’s Alwar district on Tuesday, police said. The accused, identified as Chirag Yadav, allegedly took advantage and allegedly raped her around 4 am, leaving a community in shock and a nation grappling with the realities of safety in health care settings.

According to details emerging, the assault took place around 4 am, when the accused allegedly gave an injection to the victim, purportedly to render her unconscious when she tried to raise noise.

The victim regained consciousness when her husband contacted her via mobile, leading to a call that informed her family about the attack. Upon receiving the information, the officers detained Yadav for questioning, which confirmed that the CCTV footage examined showed Yadav approaching the victim’s bed and covering her with the curtains, marking the horrific beginning of the alleged crime.

As mentioned, an FIR has been registered and investigation is currently underway. The hospital, located near Telco Chowk in Shiv Ji Park area of ​​Alwar, has been in the news raising questions over safety measures and monitoring of personnel deployed to take care of the most vulnerable.

“We have detained the accused and he is being interrogated. We have also examined CCTV footage in which he is seen going to the bed and covering it with curtains,” he said.

An FIR has been lodged and a probe is underway, the police said.

The hospital administration has cooperated with the police, providing CCTV footage and other information important for the investigation. Meanwhile, the community and activists are demanding not only strict action against the culprit but also systemic changes to ensure that this breach of trust does not happen again.
