Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is set to be a distinguished guest at the 21st convocation of Tezpur University in Assam today. Singh expressed his anticipation on X, revealing his plans to interact with the students during this significant event.

“Today, 31st December, I will be in Tezpur, Assam. Shall interact with the students of Tezpur University during their Convocation. Looking forward,” wrote Singh on X.

The convocation, attended by the Corps Commander of Gajraj Corps and numerous civil and military dignitaries, is a momentous occasion for the university. A total of 783 students are poised to receive postgraduate degrees, 428 undergraduate degrees, five PG Diplomas, and over 100 researchers will be honored with PhD degrees. Additionally, 23 students from distance and online education platforms will be conferred with degrees.

Tezpur University, situated near the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh inter-state border, plays a multifaceted role. Beyond its academic endeavors, the university is actively involved in training Indian Army personnel in the Chinese language. Earlier this year, an MoU was signed with Headquarters 4 Corps, facilitating a basic course in Chinese language for army personnel.

Rajnath Singh Assam Visit.The university is also contemplating the establishment of the Department of Defence Studies, a decision already ratified by the academic council and board of management. Prof Shambhu Nath Singh, Vice Chancellor of Tezpur University, highlighted another prospective initiative in collaboration with the defence forces. The university aims to undertake geospatial research and strategic mapping in the Indo-China border areas, contributing to India’s defence preparedness and fostering the relationship between the Indian Army and academia.

A total of 1355 students will be conferred with degrees and diplomas during this convocation, marking the end of the year and setting the stage for academic advancements in 2024.
