Re-Polling Ordered in Manipur’s Conflict-Affected Booths

Re-polling is set to take place today in 11 booths across the I-Inner Manipur Parliamentary Constituency, following incidents of violence and disruptions during the initial polling on April 19. The decision to conduct fresh polls was announced by the Manipur Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) in response to clashes and instances of EVM destruction reported in conflict-torn areas of the state.

Enhanced Security Measures

With security concerns looming large, authorities have heightened security arrangements to prevent any untoward incidents during the re-polling process. The volatile situation witnessed during the previous polling necessitates robust security measures to ensure the safety of voters and electoral officials.

Election Commission’s Directive

The Election Commission of India, under pertinent sections of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, declared the previous polls void and scheduled re-polling for April 22, 2024. The affected polling stations, primarily located in Khurai, Kshetrigao, Thongju, Uripok, and Konthoujam, will undergo fresh voting from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Incidents of Violence

The decision to order re-polling stems from incidents of violence and disruption reported during the initial polling phase. Miscreants resorted to firing and vandalizing EVMs at several polling booths, leading to chaos and injuries. One civilian sustained injuries amidst clashes at a polling booth in Moirangkampu Sajeb Awang Leikai of Imphal, underscoring the volatile nature of the electoral process in conflict-prone regions.

Ongoing Electoral Process

Manipur witnessed a voter turnout of 69.18% during the initial polling phase, reflecting the electorate’s active participation despite security concerns. The state’s electoral landscape remains dynamic, with the remaining segments of the Outer Manipur constituency scheduled for polling in the second phase on April 26.
