Dehradun : In an unprecedented moment for Uttarakhand, Justice Ritu Bahri took the oath as the state’s inaugural woman Chief Justice on Sunday. Governor Lieutenant General Gurmeet Singh (Retd) officiated the ceremony at the Raj Bhavan in Dehradun, marking a pivotal point in the state’s judicial history.
Justice Bahri’s induction into the role of Chief Justice not only signifies a momentous event for Uttarakhand but also establishes her as a trailblazer for women in the judiciary. Prior to this groundbreaking appointment, she had a distinguished career as a judge in the Punjab and Haryana High Court, bringing a wealth of experience to her new position.
The vacancy in the Chief Justice position emerged following the retirement of Justice Vipin Sanghi in October of the previous year. In the interim, Justice Manoj Tiwari assumed the responsibilities of the acting Chief Justice.
This development reflects a commendable stride towards gender inclusivity and representation in the judicial system, underscoring a commitment to fostering diversity and equal opportunities. Justice Ritu Bahri’s elevation to the Chief Justice position is poised to infuse a fresh perspective and contribute to the ongoing pursuit of justice in Uttarakhand.
