Sikkim: Over 2,000 tourists stranded as heavy rain triggers landslides; National highway closed

Among the foreign tourists stranded due to North Sikkim floods, 23 are from Bangladesh, 10 from America and three from Singapore. Along with this, officials said that 345 cars and 11 motorbikes are stuck at various places in North Sikkim.

Gangtok: Over 2,000 domestic and foreign tourists are stranded in North Sikkim on Thursday due to landslides following flash floods. Giving information about this, officials said that the road from North Sikkim district headquarters Mangan to Chungthang is blocked at Pegong Supply Khola, due to which traffic has been disrupted. As a result, 1,975 domestic and 36 foreign tourists are stranded in hotels in Lachen and Lachung areas.

Let us tell you that these places are considered to be the entrance of various places with natural beauty. Among the foreign tourists, 23 are from Bangladesh, 10 from America and three from Singapore. Along with this, officials said that 345 cars and 11 motorbikes are stuck at various places in North Sikkim. He said that after the rain stops, the work of cleaning the roads will start.

Officials said the road from district headquarters Mangan to Chungthang was blocked at Pegong Supply Khola, disrupting traffic. As a result, 1,975 domestic and 36 foreign tourists were stuck in hotels in Lachen and Lachung areas. 345 four wheelers and 11 motorbikes are also stuck at various places in North Sikkim. Areas like Lachen and Lachung in North Sikkim have been cut off from the rest of the state due to flash floods.

He said that the work of cleaning the roads will start after the rain stops. The flood has caused severe damage to the highway as well as its infrastructure, making it unsafe for any kind of vehicular movement. At present, the local authorities are taking stock of the situation.

The Border Roads Organization is working to clear the road and restore normalcy. However, it may take some time before the highway is reopened for traffic. The road is also blocked at JN Road, Railkhola, 13 Mile and Thulo Khola on the Gangtok-Nathula road due to landslides. All tourist permits for Tsomgo Lake, Baba Mandir, Nathula and North Sikkim have been canceled until further notice.
