Chennai: In a significant political development, the Tamil Maanila Congress (TMC) has declared its alliance with the BJP for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, as announced by party chief G K Vasan on Monday. Vasan confirmed his attendance at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s public meeting in Palladam, Tirupur district, on February 27 and stated that the TMC, as part of the NDA, will contest the elections under the leadership of the BJP.
This announcement marks the BJP’s first official alliance in Tamil Nadu as it strives to form a bloc distinct from the ruling DMK and the AIADMK. Notably, the TMC was part of the AIADMK-led NDA coalition in Tamil Nadu during the 2021 Assembly polls. Vasan’s declaration indicates the end of his party’s ties with the AIADMK, which had formally severed its alliance with the BJP in September 2023 under the leadership of Edappadi K Palaniswami.
Vasan emphasized that the decision to align with the BJP aligns with his party’s historical “national outlook” dating back to its founding by his late father, G K Moopanar. The alliance is motivated by considerations for the welfare of Tamil Nadu, the Tamils, and the overarching goal of a strong and prosperous India.
The former union minister highlighted the electorate’s desire for the BJP to secure a third term, citing their belief that another term under Prime Minister Narendra Modi would contribute to economic prosperity and poverty reduction. The alliance with the BJP positions the Tamil Maanila Congress as a key player in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls in Tamil Nadu.
