Team India’s dream of winning the World Cup was shattered, lost by 5 runs in the semi-finals

New Delhi:The Indian women’s team’s T20 Women’s World Cup journey ended with a semi-final loss to Australia.

Australia have reached a seventh successive T20 World Cup final but not without an almighty fight from India, who came five runs short in a thrilling semi-final in Cape Town.

Australia won the toss and batted first. Despite a slow start, the defending champions put on a formidable total of 172/4 in their 20 overs courtesy of a half-century from Beth Mooney and some quick-fire innings from Meg Lanning and Ashleigh Gardner.

Australia thought this was slipping away at one stage, but Harmanpreet’s bat getting stuck before the crease opened the door for them. Australia rode on the slice of luck that India didn’t have in their fielding effort. India were shoddy with their field placing, fielding and bowling as Australia made an above-par total

Match score:

Australia 172 for 4 (Mooney 54, Lanning 49*, Pandey 2-32) beat India 167 for 8 (Harmanpreet 52, Rodrigues 43, Brown 2-18) by five runs.

Harmanpreet Indian Captan: Can’t be unluckier than this, to get that momentum back when me and Jemi were batting. And to lose after that, we didn’t expect this today. The way I got runout, can’t be unluckier than that, but I am happy with the way we played in this tournament. We even though we didn’t play to our strengths, we reached the semis. We gave those easy catches away. Got to take those when you want to win. We misfielded. We can only learn from these lessons and not repeat the mistakes.

“The fight that India put up was quite appreciable in a momentous occasion for the Indian women’s cricket in South Africa.”
