Union Minister reacts to Rashmika Mandanna’s AI morphed viral video; Amitabh Bachchan raises concerns

Mumbai: Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan aka Big B has demanded legal action after an AI deepfake video of Rashmika Mandanna started doing rounds on social media. The video shows a woman, wearing a black outfit, entering an elevator. However, her face has been morphed and edited in a way that it resembles the actress. Several users on the internet claimed that the video was fake raises questions on how “unreliable” information is spreading rapidly on the internet.

Reacting to a deepfake AI video purportedly featuring actor Rashmika Mandanna, Union Minister Rajiv Chandrashekhar stressed that such “harmful misinformation needs to be dealt with by platforms”.

“PM Narendra Modi-led central government is committed to ensuring safety and trust of all DigitalNagriks using internet. Under the IT rules notified in April, 2023– it is a legal obligation for platforms to — 1. ensure no misinformation is posted by any user AND, ensure that when reported by any user or govt, misinformation is removed in 36 hours, If platforms do not comply with us, rule 7 will apply and platforms can be taken to court by aggrieved person under provisions of IPC. Deepfakes are latest and even more dangerous and damaging form of misinformation and needs to be dealt with by platforms,” Chandrasekhar wrote in his post on X.

Abhishek Kumar, a journalist, shared the video on X, flags concerns about the need for new legal and regulatory measures to combat the spread of fake content on the internet. The initial video was originally shared on Instagram on October 9, featuring a woman named Zara Patel. There is no evidence to suggest that Patel was involved in the creation of the deepfake video. It remains a mystery who created the fake video and what their motivations were. Sadly, this is not an isolated incident, as various celebrities from different fields have fallen victim to similar fake videos in recent years.

Mr Bachchan reposted the video and said “yes this is a strong case for legal.”

A deepfake video showing actor Rashmika Mandanna is acquisition traction on the internet. The clip shows Ms Mandanna entering an elevator. But fellow actors and other users on social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter) quickly pointed out that it is digitally manipulated

Several users also shared the original video and called out those making such videos just to garner views. A section of users were shocked and also demanded ‘strict action’ against those who uploaded it and claimed that the woman is Rashmika.

One of the user also explained that at 0:01 second in the video, one can see the face of the woman changing from the other girl to Rashmika.

“This is shocking for content creators and actors whose personality rights and even content/videos are in public sphere. The worst part is that the current setup is not even strong enough to criminalize people who attempt such deepfake videos. We need proper regulation,” commented a user.

A person said, “High quality deep fake, very disturbing. I think the powerful will use it to their advantage and the ordinary person will suffer. Enough to destroy anyone.”
