The source of the deadly smoke is suspected to be an “angithi” or traditional Indian coal brazier.

The family was reportedly sleeping when the incident occurred on Monday night. It seems that the fireplace, which served as a heat source during the cold winter night, emitted dangerous levels of carbon monoxide, leading to the unfortunate death of five members of the family. The victims were found unconscious in their home and could not be revived when they reached the hospital.

Following the incident, two additional family members were also affected by the poisonous smoke and have been admitted to hospital. His condition is said to be serious. The incident is a sobering reminder of the risks associated with the use of traditional heating and cooking methods in India, especially in rural areas. This emphasizes the need for adequate ventilation and safety measures when using appliances such as fireplaces, which can emit hazardous gases if not used properly. As the country grapples with the shock of the incident, it calls for a renewed focus on educating communities about safety measures, especially during the colder months.
