Uttarakhand CM Dhami: Uniform Civil Code Committee Set to Present Report on February 2

In a significant development, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami announced that the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Committee has concluded its work, and its comprehensive report is scheduled to be submitted to the state government on February 2. The culmination of this process will pave the way for the report’s consideration by the Cabinet, followed by its introduction in the state Assembly for deliberation and potential enactment.

Addressing the media, CM Dhami stated, “In alignment with our commitment to the people of the state during the 2022 assembly elections, we established the UCC Committee with the aim of implementing the Uniform Civil Code. The committee has successfully concluded its proceedings, and we anticipate the submission of its report on February 2.”

Established on May 27, 2022, the UCC Committee, chaired by Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai, was tasked with formulating recommendations for the implementation of a Uniform Civil Code in Uttarakhand. The proposed code encompasses a unified set of laws addressing various aspects such as marriage, inheritance, adoption, and more.

Article 44 of the Constitution of India underscores the state’s responsibility to strive for a Uniform Civil Code throughout the nation. The Uniform Civil Code has been a subject of ongoing political discourse and gained renewed attention following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s endorsement in June of the previous year. PM Modi emphasized the imperative nature of a uniform legal framework, aligning with the foundational principles and ideals of the Constitution.

During an address in Bhopal, PM Modi remarked, “The country cannot function with two laws. The Constitution advocates equal rights, and the Supreme Court has also urged the implementation of the UCC. Those opposing it are playing vote bank politics.” The UCC Committee’s impending report submission marks a crucial step towards potential legislative reforms in Uttarakhand.
