Uttarakhand: Gurdwara chief’s main shooter Amarjeet Singh killed in police encounter

Uttarakhand: In the early hours of Tuesday, the man who shot the dera kar seva chief of the Nanakmatta Sahib Gurdwara was killed by the Uttarakhand STF and Haridwar Police in an encounter in Udham Singh Nagar of Uttarakhand, the state’s top cop said.

After the encounter, the Uttarakhand STF and Haridwar Police have initiated a joint operation to apprehend the absconding culprit. Amarjeet Singh, the deceased, had a criminal record with over 16 cases registered against him. Baba Tarsem Singh was shot dead on March 28 on the shrine’s premises by Sarabjit Singh and Amarjit Singh, who came on a bike.

The dera kar seva chief of the Nanakmatta Sahib Gurdwara was sitting in a chair when he was shot with a rifle by the shooter who was riding pillion. Announcing the death of Amarjeet Singh, Uttarakhand DGP Abhinav Kumar told media that his companion has fled and officers are searching for him.

The DGP said,”Uttarakhand Police had taken Baba’s murder as a challenge and the STF and police were constantly looking for both the killers. The police will deal strictly with criminals if they commit such heinous crimes in Uttarakhand.”

Haridwar Senior Superintendent of Police Parminder Doval said the encounter happened between Kaliyar Road and Bhagwanpur in Haridwar. Earlier on Sunday, the Udham Singh Nagar Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) increased the reward amount for both the absconding main accused (shooters), Amarjit Singh and Sarabjit Singh, from Rs 50 thousand to one lakh each.

Five people were booked in connection with the murder of Baba Tarsem Singh. They were allegedly involved in orchestrating the crime by assembling criminals, providing resources, and supplying weapons, police said. The police will deal strictly with the criminals if they commit such heinous crimes in Uttarakhand, the DGP said.

Those named in the FIR include two of the attackers – Sarabjit Singh and Amarjit Singh – IAS officer Harbans Singh Chugh who heads the Nanakmatta Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee, Baba Anoop Singh and Pritam Singh Sandhu, vice-president of a regional Sikh organisation. DGP Kumar had said that Uttarakhand Police had taken Baba’s murder as a challenge and the STF and police were constantly looking for both the killers.
