Uttarakhand Madrasas to Include Lord Ram’s Story in Curriculum

Uttarakhand : In a groundbreaking move, the Uttarakhand Waqf Board has decided to include the story of Lord Ram in the curriculum of madrasas across the state. The new syllabus, part of the “madrasa modernisation programme,” is set to be implemented from the upcoming academic session starting in March.

Waqf Board Chairman Shadab Shams Advocates Inclusion

Shadab Shams, Chairman of the Waqf Board and a BJP leader, expressed his support for the initiative, highlighting that Lord Ram’s values transcend religious boundaries. He emphasized that seasoned Muslim clerics have endorsed the decision, emphasizing the universal appeal of Lord Ram’s teachings.

Initial Rollout in Select Districts

Initially, the new syllabus will be introduced in madrasas in key districts such as Dehradun, Haridwar, Udham Singh Nagar, and Nainital. The move aims to integrate the cultural heritage of Lord Ram alongside teachings about Prophet Mohammad.

Shams Defends Decision Against Potential Opposition

Shadab Shams, undeterred by potential opposition from his own community, asserted that the move aligns with the diverse cultural fabric of India. He emphasized the importance of teaching Indian Muslim children about their own cultural icons, distancing themselves from external influences.

Quoting 20th-century Muslim philosopher Allama Iqbal, Shams highlighted the pride that India takes in the existence of Lord Ram, considering him the leader of Hind. He stressed the moral values inherent in Lord Ram’s life, citing his sacrifice and commitment to duty.

Emphasis on NCERT Books and Cultural Icons

Shams also announced plans to introduce NCERT books in madrasas, promoting a standardized educational framework. He reiterated that Indian Muslims are Hindi Muslims, not defined by external influences, and will teach their children about cultural icons that instill high moral values.

This move comes shortly after the historic inauguration of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya on January 22, attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The decision reflects a step toward fostering inclusivity and embracing India’s rich cultural diversity within the education system.
