Varanasi Lok Sabha Election 2024: Congress’s Ajai Rai Challenges BJP’s Narendra Modi

As the Lok Sabha elections approach, the Congress party has nominated Ajai Rai to contest from the Varanasi constituency, setting the stage for a significant political battle against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has held a stronghold in Varanasi since 2014.

Congress’s Ajai Rai Challenges BJP’s Narendra Modi

Beginning his career with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Ajai Rai later joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), actively participating in the Ram Janmabhoomi movement. Rai’s political trajectory led him to win the Kolasla seat in 1996 and secure a ministerial position in the BSP-BJP alliance government. Eventually, he aligned with the Congress in 2012.

Challenges in 2014 Lok Sabha Elections

Having contested against PM Narendra Modi in the 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Ajai Rai secured the third position on both occasions. Despite being a former five-time MLA from Varanasi, his vote share was overshadowed by PM Modi’s overwhelming popularity.

Upcoming Polls in Varanasi

The Varanasi constituency, with five assembly seats, is gearing up for voting on June 1st. With over 19.62 lakh voters, including a significant number of first-time voters, the election dynamics in Varanasi are poised to draw close attention.

PM Modi to Contest from Varanasi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to contest the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from Varanasi, marking his third consecutive bid from the constituency. BJP’s decision underscores Modi’s strong influence in Varanasi, where he secured resounding victories in the 2014 and 2019 elections.

With Uttar Pradesh’s significant electoral significance, Varanasi holds immense importance. PM Modi’s triumphs in 2014 and 2019 elections further solidified his hold over Varanasi, known as the “road to Delhi.”

Congress vs. PM Modi in Varanasi

The contest in Varanasi is expected to intensify with the Opposition uniting. The Samajwadi Party’s support for the Congress candidate adds a new dimension to the electoral landscape, setting the stage for a compelling showdown between Ajai Rai and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
