Victoria Gowri takes oath as Madras HC judge after SC dismisses petition

New Delhi: Advocate L Victoria Gawri was sworn in as an additional judge of the Madras High Court on Tuesday. On the other hand, the Supreme Court also dismissed the petition challenging his appointment. Victoria Gawri’s appointment was challenged on the basis of her controversial statements and political role.

The Central Government had notified the appointment of Advocate L Victoria Gawri as an Admission Judge in the Madras High Court. This decision of the Center was challenged in the Supreme Court. The bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud rejected this petition.

Earlier, the decision to make Gawri a judge was opposed by 21 lawyers of the Madras High Court. The lawyers had written to President Draupadi Murmu, urging him to return the file submitted by the Supreme Court Collegium, which recommended the appointment of Victoria Gawri. The lawyers had claimed that Victoria Gawri is a BJP leader.

Not only this, the lawyers had also mentioned some statements of Victoria Gawri. Which were allegedly against minority communities. The lawyers had alleged that Gawri views and religious bigotry disqualified him for appointment as a High Court judge.
