Kolkata: In a sudden turn of events ahead of Lok Sabha Elections, Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Satyan Chowdhury was shot dead by unidentified miscreants in West Bengal’s Baharampur on Sunday. Chowdhury, the party’s general secretary for Murshidabad, was attacked by a group of persons on bikes who opened fire at close range.
The attackers fired three rounds at Satyan Chowdhury near an under-construction multi-storey building in Baharampur, according to sources. The TMC leader was swiftly rushed to a hospital for treatment. However, he was pronounced dead on arrival. The police have initiated an investigation into the murder. The police are examining CCTV footage of the area to identify the assailants.
Baharampur Municipality Chairman Nadugopal Mukhopadhyay alleged that Congress and CPM-backed miscreants were responsible for the murder of 65-year-old Chowdhury alleging that the TMC wanted to create unrest ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Denying these allegations, Murshidabad district CPM secretary Jamir Mollah said, “They have been killed by their own people. This is the internal fight of TMC.”
The police have launched an investigation into the murder.
Chowdhury, who was once close to Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, had switched allegiance to the ruling TMC. The motive behind the murder is unclear.
