Heavy snowfall in the higher reaches of Himachal Pradesh left 176 roads, including four national highways, blocked on Friday

There is continuous heavy snowfall in many areas of Himachal Pradesh. Due to this, movement on 176 roads including four national highways has blocked on Friday. In the last 24 hours, 470 power and 10 water supply plants in the state have come to a standstill. The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for drop in temperature and lightning at different places in the hills and plains in the next 24 hours.

Police issued an advisory, urging people to avoid unnecessary travel after the higher reaches of Kullu and Lahaul-Spiti districts experienced heavy snowfall overnight. Manali deputy superintendent of police Hem Chand Verma said there was around 3-ft snow at the north and south portals of Atal Tunnel, while Solang Valley and Kothi barrier got more than a foot of snow. Verma said vehicles would be allowed till Nehru Kund beyond Manali and the road till Palchan is open for four-wheel drive.

According to the meteorological department, Kothi in Kullu got the state’s highest 35cm of snowfall, while Gondla in Lahaul-Spiti recorded 25cm of snowfall and the district’s administrative centre, Keylong, received 23cm of snowfall, Kukumseri 21.4cm and Hansa 10cm.The lowest temperature in Lahaul-Spiti has reached minus 3.5 degree Celsius.

In other areas of Himachal too, the temperature remained very low. It was minus 1.3 degrees Celsius in Kukumseri, minus 0.4 degrees in Kalpa in Kinnaur, minus 0.2 degrees in Narkanda, 2.2 degrees in Kufri, 2.6 degrees in Manali, 1.9 degrees in Dalhousie and 5.5 degrees in Shimla.

The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for lightning in many areas of Himachal Pradesh.
