‘Just ate one date a day’: Two brothers, aged 29 and 27, die of hunger due to excessive fasting in Goa

The father of two young men had started living separately because he was unhappy with his wife and children, due to their disagreement over fasting practices. The elder of the two brothers has been identified as Mohammad Zubair Khan, while the younger has been identified as Aafan Khan.

Madgaon/Goa: In a distressing incident, two brothers, aged 29 and 27, were found dead in their residence in Goa due to extreme starvation. As per the police, the two brothers and their mother, who was found unconscious in another room, used consume only one date a day for several days.

The father of two young men had started living separately as he was unhappy with his wife and children, due to his disagreement with them over fasting practices. Among the two brothers, the elder has been identified as Mohammad Zuber Khan, while the younger one has been identified as Aafan Khan. Their mother has been identified as Ruksana Khan.

While she has been admitted to a government hospital, soon she will be transferred to the Institute of Psychiatry and Human Behaviour (IPHB) at Goa Medical College. Earlier on Wednesday, the father Nazir Khan, went to meet his family in Margao but did not receive any information even after knocking on the door several times.

Speaking to sources, Nazir Khan, who work as a garment salesman, said the house was locked from inside when he reached. After the door was opened, the body of his younger son was found in one room while the body of his elder son was found in the other room. Earlier too, he had tried to visit the family, but was not allowed inside.

According to Akhbar Khan, the uncle of the two deceased, the mother and her children isolated themselves in the house and were not meeting each other for the past few days. He further said that Nazir had shifted to another house due to his frequent arguments with his wife and their children due to fasting and irregular eating habits. It’s noteworthy, both Zube and Aafan had spent their childhood mostly at their maternal home in Maharashtra’s Sindhudurg district.
