Lucknow : A dramatic scene unfolded at Lucknow’s Chaudhary Charan Singh Airport as thirty passengers, detained on suspicion of gold smuggling, managed to escape custody. The incident occurred when one individual feigned illness, creating chaos and providing an opportunity for the detainees to flee, officials reported on Wednesday.
Upon initial frisking, officials uncovered a significant haul, including cigarettes valued at over Rs 3 crore and cash totaling Rs 23.90 lakh from some of the detained passengers, according to Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Shashank Singh.
The detained passengers, part of a group arriving from Sharjah, faced questioning by Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) and Customs Department officials. While six passengers admitted to carrying gold, the interrogation of the remaining 30 individuals was abruptly interrupted when one feigned illness, leading to chaos and their subsequent escape.
Efforts to locate and apprehend the fleeing passengers are underway, with custom and police officials launching a search operation. A case has been registered under relevant sections based on the complaint, and authorities are actively pursuing leads to bring the accused individuals to justice.
