Pune: In a tragic accident on Tuesday, Five women were killed and several others were injured after a speeding SUV knocked them down while they were crossing the Nashik-Pune highway in Maharashtra's Pune district, police said.
Pune: In a tragic accident on Tuesday, Five women were killed and several others were injured after a speeding SUV knocked them down while they were crossing the Nashik-Pune highway in Maharashtra’s Pune district, police said.
The incident occurred when a group of 17 women was crossing the highway at around 10.45 pm near Shiroli village, about 50 km from Pune, to reach a marriage hall for catering work, an official said.The injured were rushed to Jeevan Raksha hospital for treatment. The Police are investigating the cause of the accident.
A police officer from Khed police station said, “These women had come from Pune for catering work at a marriage hall located along the Pune-Nashik highway. While they were crossing the highway, an SUV crashed into them. After the accident, the SUV driver sped ahead before taking a U-turn and driving back towards Pune.”
The driver is believed to have fled with the vehicle after the accident and efforts are on to track him down. The Police have launched a search to nab the driver. While two women died on the spot, three others succumbed to their injuries in a hospital, he said, adding three women are hospitalised.
A case has been registered against the unidentified SUV driver and investigation is on.
